First-class Arena Footing – part art, part science!
We've learned a lot about what it takes to produce an excellent riding surface for each discipline throughout a long and varied season.
Here's how we think about it.....
As experienced horse people know, good footing is difficult to produce on a consistent basis. The Horse Park is committed to providing excellent footing as our #1 priority. But that requires constant investments and vigilance. Here’s how we approach the challenges;our plans and funding needs for 2014 are noted in italics:
- Ensure proper material and construction
o Design and install with seasoned professionals
o Bob Kiser remains ongoing consultant
o Retain balance of materials
- Add sand each year
- Remix for evenness when necessary
- Maintain excellent drainage
o Preserve correct base and slopes
o Laser level surface grade
- Minimize water/wind erosion,
o Seal surface in adverse weather conditions
- Purchase and use roller
- Groom with correct Equipment and Techniques
o Water the right amount and evenly
- Upgrade truck sprayer system
o Vary drags and patterns depending on
conditions and purpose
- Purchase smaller, spring tooth drag
- Train and coach staff
- Replace worn equipment parts
As you can see, this requires daily focus throughout the season, but it must start with the right materials ...soo we’re dreaming of piles of sandfor the new year!
